My work explores how form and space come into being through clay.

The work begins with memories of small, hidden spaces from childhood — the narrow gap inside a wardrobe, the space beneath a desk, the folds of a blanket. These were places to withdraw from the noise of the outside world, brief refuges where I could inhabit a world entirely my own. I can no longer hide my body within such spaces, but the act of making still creates an inner place for me to dwell in.

Clay is a material without fixed identity. In its pliable state, it can take any form — soft curves or sharp structures — holding countless possibilities within it. Through firing, this material becomes solid, permanently retaining the traces of both deliberate choice and chance. I am drawn to this moment of transformation, when possibility condenses into a single, fixed form.

My process begins by cutting a form thrown on the wheel in half, then rejoining it. I work within certain rules and structures, but not every outcome is planned. When the cut pieces are reconnected in new ways, unexpected spaces and relationships emerge — moments of discovery I pay close attention to. Through this process of separation and reconstruction, each form finds a new structure, revealing tension, balance, and the possibility of empty space between its parts.

More recently, this exploration has extended into the relationship between the flat plane and three-dimensional form. While the lines, planes, and colors on the surface are composed with intention, the forms placed upon it — and the shadows they cast — generate another kind of space, one I cannot fully control. Form and shadow, volume and surface, intention and chance continually negotiate with one another, producing scenes that cannot be predicted.

My work does not aim to depict a particular narrative or embody a single symbol. It is closer to a spatial experience that arises as forms meet, separate, and enter into relation with one another. Within this process, I ask whether absence can be as real as presence. What began as an interest in childhood hiding places has grown into a broader inquiry into how space is perceived, inhabited, and continually reconfigured.

Through clay — a material that yields and resists in equal measure — I build, cut, and reconnect form, continually searching for new relationships. My work is less a process aimed at a finished result than a record of moments discovered where intention and chance meet.
